The origins of Padua are prehistoric, but the town developed in particular with the Romans in the second century B.C.

Padua underwent the invasion of the Longobards and in the Middle Ages it faced a dark period because of the domination of some powerful families: the Ezzelino, the Della Scala and the Da Carrara families.
