Travel and Culture in Umbria
A few Km away from Amelia you can visit the beautiful Alviano Oasis, with its bird species and its unpolluted habitat, protected and managed by the WWF.
Another very interesting park is 42 Km away from Amelia, direction Avigliano Umbro (a centre of Roman origin) where, at Dunarobba, you can find the Fossil Forest with the same name, one of the richest fossil woods existing in the world.
In ancient times this place was occupied by Lake Tiberino and had a tropical climate, it was a far off habitat for hippoes, elephants and for giant sequoias. Throughout the centuries this zone was covered by sediments and clay, which have allowed its preservation till today.
The really amazing aspect is that the trees have kept in the form of wood, but have not become petrified, as it usually happens to the other kinds of fossil.
So here you have the possibility to admire a natural museum, which is really unique and special, since it allows you to know the ancestors of the today’s Sequoia sempervirens, that grow on our planet and, in particular, in the American Yellowstone Park.
