In Catania the most involving religious feast is the one dedicated to the patron saint, the young martyr Agatha, a Sicilian virgin, who had been persecuted by Quinziano, the prefect of the emperor Decio.
Every year, from 3rd to 5th February, Catania is transformed to give its patron an extraordinary celebration, which can be compared to the Holy Week in Seville.
In this period Catania is covered with sacred ornaments, lights, votive flames, sounds and colours, ready to greet the traditional procession of the Candelore, huge candles covered with handcrafted decorations, enclosed into a little wooden monument, which portrays some scenes taken from the martyrdom of the Saint.
