Alghero was founded by the Genoese inhabitants in the 11th century and remained under the Doria dynasty for a long time which was interrupted only by a short period dominated by the Pisano family (1283-1284).
In 1353,after the conquest of Peter IV of Arborea, the Catalan Alghero began to develop and became a Catalan colony.
The Aragonese domination first and, later, the Spanish one lasted until 1720, but in the 16th century the town was fortified because of its important strategic position in the west Mediterranean Sea.
