HISTORY

The Montefeltro territory was populated since the prehistory, in spite of the difficulties of cultivation faced by the local populations and due to the mountainous soil. The whole area was later conquered by the Romans with the Battle of Sestino, as it is proved by the numerous archeologic finds present in the territory.

The Montefeltro territory was populated since the prehistory, in spite of the difficulties of cultivation faced by the local populations and due to the mountainous soil.

Otherwise, Frontino Castle dates back to the early Middle Ages, when the Montefeltro landowners built several castles, in order to protect the boundaries of their territory. While Carpegna and Montefeltro were at first governed by the Malatesta, Frontino and Belforte were part of the Massa trabaria, a territory which was dependent on the Church and that had been created to send timber to Rome for the building of new cathedrals. So the castle of Frontino was attacked and destroyed several times because of its close connection with the Church of Rome.

When the Montefeltro subdued the whole area, Frontino lived almost the same situation of the other nearby fortifications, which frequently changed the ruler who governed them.Camerano was annexed to the Italian Kingdom thanks to the Piedmontese, in 1860, after the Battle of Castelfidardo.

At the beginning of the 20th century the handicraft activity started to develop and it characterizes, still today, the economic life and the history of Camerano. After the war and the German occupation in 1943, the village was set free by the allied troops in 1944.
