Travel and Culture in Lombardy
Today Lugano is the biggest town in Canton Ticino and an important centre for the organization of international conferences
Since the 19th century the territory of Canton Ticino has been subject to the dioceses of Milan and Como, which have taken care of the evangelization, especially in the educational field.
Canton Ticino became independent in 1803, facing many difficulties, due to the wish to become an autonomous diocese.
With the archpriest Vincenzo Molo from Bellinzona (1887-1904) the Lugano diocese became a reality and so, in 1888, Pope Leo XIII recognized the birth of this new diocese with the Papal bull “Ad Universam”.
Today Lugano is the most important town in Canton Ticino and, with its 52500 inhabitants, it has become an important centre for the organization of international conferences, which is famous all over Europe. Moreover the town is an important financial and cultural reference for Switzerland itself.
