Travel and Culture in Liguria
Sanremo is one of the most important and prestigious touristic centres of the Mediterranean that has been attracting, ever since the 19th century, famous and noble figures.
Exactly towards the end of the 19th century the first elegant villas appeared, with their wonderful gardens which have determined their image in time.
The oldest part of Sanremo is called Pigna. It is situated on the highest part of the town and it dates back to 1000, but it has been preserved intact until today.
The ancient part is built as a structure of concentric rings, in order to defend properly the town against the attacks from the sea.
All houses are of medieval origin and, in the past, they gave hospitality to Pope Paul III and to Napoleon Bonaparte.
Otherwise, the modern town is situated near the coast. It dates back to the 19th-20th centuries and it is made of elegant palaces, villas, parks and Art Nouveau gardens.
The mild and pleasant climate, with a constant temperature all year round, has fostered tourism and the cultivation of plants and flowers which are, today, the emblem of the town all over the world.
