Travel and Culture in Liguria
If you are interested in attending an Italian language
course in Liguria, we would like to help you in your decision by
giving you some useful information:
WHERE IS LIGURIA ?
Liguria is situated in northern Italy and overlooks the Ligurian
Sea.
The region borders with Piedmont, Lombardy and Emilia Romagna to
the north, to the east with Emilia Romagna and Tuscany, it is washed
by the Ligurian Sea to the south and it borders to France to the
west.
The most populated town, that is also the regional capital, is Genoa.
The other chieftowns are: Imperia, Savona and La Spezia.
Some other well-known towns are: Rapallo, Chiavari, Varazze and
San Remo.
WHAT IS THE TERRITORY LIKE ?
The surface of the Ligurian territory is 5.418 square Km large;
65% is mountainous and 35% is hilly. There are no plains and the
coasts drop sheer to the sea.
The eastern mountains of Liguria are part of the Appeninnes chain,
while to the west they belong to the Alps. The highest peak is Mount
Saccarello, with its 2200 metres of height.
HOW CAN YOU REACH IT ?
The most important town of the region is Genoa, of course, which
can be reached by plane thanks to its Cristoforo Colombo airport,
a very important link to the principal towns of the region.
You can reach Genoa by sea too, through the regular ferry-boat services
that connect it to the most important Mediterranean Islands (Sardinia,
Sicily and Corsica) and with Spain and Tunisia.
If you prefer to get here by car, the most mportant motorways are:
the A7 Genoa-Milan, the A10 Genoa-Ventimiglia, the A12 Genoa-Livorno
and the A26 Genoa Voltri-Gattico.
WHAT DOES IT OFFER?
Tourism is an essential resource for the region, that can offer
seaside towns and naturalistic landscapes of great and unique beauty
to all its visitors.
We cannot forget the towns: Genoa (that this year has been chosen
as the European Capital of Culture), Chiavari and also San Remo,
very famous for its flowers and its Italian Song Festival.
Besides the naturalistic beauties, Liguria offers towns rich in
history and tradition, characterized by beautiful monuments and
an excellent cooking, made of tasty and varied dishes, that are
typical of its gastronomy.
