The origins of the town are connected with the Romans. During the 2nd century B.C. they transformed Reggio Emilia into an active town that remained such until the arrival of the barbaric peoples. In the 9th century the Matilde county was born on this land and exactly inside the Canossa walls (during the Investiture Conflict) Henry IV, in 1077, presented himself to Pope Gregory VII for the dissolution of the excommunication.
After the feudal period Reggio was one among the first towns that became a free commune and in the 15th century it passed under the dominion of the House of Este. The 17th and 18th centuries were characterized by many wars and sacks but in the periods of peace the population from Reggio found the way to express its laboriousness by erecting some important palaces and religious buildings.
In January 1797 Reggio saw the birth of the Cispadane Republic and of the Italian tricolour that later was adopted as the official Italian flag. With the Fascist period the resistance of the people from Reggio Emilia culminated with with the fight of liberation, that earned the town the decoration with a gold medal for military valour.
