Reggio Emilia offers is a very rich and interesting town that offers and a series of wonderful and prestigious monuments to its visitors. We recommend you to visit the cloisters: the Benedictine one, that was built in 1584 by the Pacchionis and is formed by two cloisters(the small cloister and the big cloister) and St Domenico’s cloister, too.
The Duomo – Cathedral is also worth visiting with attention. It was built around 857 on a pre-existing Roman building, according to the Romanesque style and, later, it was adapted to the 15th century style. Then St Prospero Basilica, which is particularly picturesque, together with the homonymous tower, create the background to the market square.
Particularly unusual is SS Girolamo and Vitale Church that stands out as an example of mature Baroque. Finally it is important to rememeber the Basilica of the Blessed Virgin of Ghiara, that is connected to a miracle happened in 1596. In this Basilica you can find a characteristic cycle of frescoes and altar-pieces which are preserved inside and were executed by the best artists of the 17th century in Emilia, as Carracci and il Guercino, with his "Crucifixion of Christ with the Madonna and SS Mary Magdalene, St John and St Prospero" (1625).
