HISTORY

What attracted the primitive peoples here was the existence of hot water and also the configuration of the valleys, which could be crossed.

The first settlements date back to preheistory and the finds prove the presence of man already since the Neolithic age. According to some valid hypothesis, what attracted the primitive peoples here was the existence of hot water and also the configuration of the valleys, which could be crossed. So the thermal water and the road conditions had influenced, since prehistory, the social and economic events of this town. The Romans appreciated a lot the thermal baths of Bagno and Marziale celebrated their healing and therapeutic virtues, that are today exalted by three modern establishments.

In the feudal period the territory was dominated by Counts Guidi, who built here the two castles Corzano and Montegranelli, of which we have some imposing traces today.

In the feudal period the territory was dominated by Counts Guidi, who built here the two castles Corzano and Montegranelli, of which we have some imposing traces today. In 1404 the whole territory was conquered by the Florentine Republic, that organized it into the Capitanato della Val di Bagno. The village kept being bound to Florence, even after the unity of Italy, until 1923, when the municipality of Bagno was moved from the province of Florence to the one of Forlì.
The Tuscan influence in this part of Romagna is everywhere evident: in the design of the refined palaces, in the architecture of the country houses and in the dialect, which has got nothing from Romagna, but a lot of Dante’s language.
