From 31st July to 3rd August, Bagno di Romagna commemorates an ancient historical moment: the swearing in of the new Captain. In the past, the captain assured the good running of the Capitanato della Val di Bagno (the Bagno Valley area), bound to the Florentine State. Every year the captain arrived in Bagno to rule and manage the territory and took office with a ceremony, which had been repeated from 1454 to 1775.
Today, the celebration lasts for four days and it is recalled through a theatre show, performed by the San Sepolcro flag-wavers, with the Giochi delle Contrade (games of the different districts) and the revival of the ancient trades and old craft shops, performed by the Gruppo dei Vecchi Mestieri from Ravenna.
On the last day of the feast, when the captain’s change is actual, a parade in period costume closes the celebration.
