Travel and Culture in Campania
An important event in Pisciotta is the “Mezza Galera” fair, in Pisciotta, that is organized by the Delta Association every year on the 25th July and on 25th August in Marina di Pisciotta.
The word fair derives from the Latin word feria that means holiday. The Delta Association wants to offer a show of the Cilento cultural traditions and customs, by proposing a celebration where both past and present meet together.
The name “Mezza Galera” is due to the presence, in Marina di Pisciotta, of the historic Mezza Galera rock.
This rock, in 1700, represented a safe shelter for the galleys (typical 18th century oared ships) that smuggled salt and hid beyond it, so to escape the national revenue’s controls.
During the fair you can see some folk and cultural celebrations too, since the Cilento inhabitants have always shown a historical commitment as painters, men of letters and farmers, so there is the assignation of the Galea Price to three people who have brought prestige to Cilento and have made it famous in Italy and abroad.
A feast that wants to be a spur for the other villages of the territory to the cooperation and to the improvement of an area which is overflowing with landscape and naturalistic beauties.
