Otranto is a charming town, full of history, which is worth visiting with attention.

A walk in the old town centre, through the alleys and the narrow streets paved with stones is definitely obligatory.

A walk in the old town centre, through the alleys and the narrow streets paved with stones is definitely obligatory.

The historical-artistic monuments that we recommend you to visit are the Castle, that was built after the Turkish invasion in 1480, during which most part of the inhabitants of Otranto died, the Byzantine St Peter’s Basilica and the Cathedral.

St Peter’s Basilica dates back to the end of the 9th century, it has got a basilican design and it contains some interesting Byzantine frescoes.
Otherwise, the cathedral has got Norman origins and it is one of the most ancient of the whole Apulian Romanesque.

St. Catherine's Church

Some Baroque interventions on the façade made in Apulian Romanesque-Gothic style were made in the following period. Above the portal opens a magnificent Romanesque rose window, but the Cathedral’s real treasure is the floor mosaic of the central nave, realized beginning from 1163, which represents images and symbols belonging to the different cultures that this place had met in the passing of time.
