Learn about Italian Culture and Wine in the place where it was created! Calabria - the south of Italy.
...About Tropea
...one of the most beautiful towns in Calabria with an expansive view along the south Tyrrhenian coast. Austere and majestic, Tropea rises out of the promontory of Monte Poro which lies between the two gulfs of Sant’Eufemia and Gioia. It overlooks a mirror of sky-blue, crystal-clear sea, with its incredible rocks: "La Pizzuta","Formicoli","San Leonardo" and "Isola Bella".
The wild, white, sandy beaches which snake their way into little grottoes and creeks are interrupted by valleys and fertile, rippling hills full of fruit and citrus fruit trees, onion and vegetable fields, bougainvillaea, verbenas, lime trees, jasmine and other sweet-smelling Mediterranean plants.
Apart from the sparkling unpolluted sea, the city itself offers a fascinating historical and artistic profile, thanks to its patrician houses with their impressive entrances adorned by capitals and frescoes by important artists and to the numerous, ancient churches rich in sacred images recalling singular legends. Its typical little, deserted squares and piazzas reachable only by way of narrow alleyways and populated by mythical ghosts, take us back to the days of the Saracen invasions.
...About our school
The Italian Language School is located in the Centro Storico di Tropea, in the Palazzo Barone, which was built in the fourteenth century, and is composed of a reception, 3 class areas, a reading area/library, an internet point and an administration office. The school is surrounded by old palaces and churches.
The Italian language courses offered by the School are taught by qualified teachers from Tropea. The teachers are native speakers with academic education and have at their disposal a long-time teaching experience in the Italian instruction to the foreigners. The endeavor of all co-workers is geared to offering a qualified Italian language instruction and an outstanding culture program to the students.
Our goal is to teach the Italian language to all the students successfully in accordance with their knowledge, so that they apply the Italian language confidently. On the first day, students take a placement language test to determine their level of Italian and to enable us to create homogeneous classes. There are five levels.
In conjunction with Villa Dante - International Center for the Study of Italian Language and Culture, the sommelier of Tropea’s La Munizione Wine Bar is offering special courses on wine appreciation, regional wines, and advanced wine tasting. Students enrolled at Villa Dante for at least one month of intensive classes, or who have reached intermediate level, may enroll in these supplementary classes to be held on the bar’s terrazzo with breathtaking views of the Tyrrenian Sea at sundown.
Historically, Calabria has always had the perfect climate for creating wine and is believed to be where wine was first created. In ancient times, Calabria was called “Enotria", the land of wine. The Greeks believed its lands created the most delicious and treasured wines, including the famous Cremissa, official wine of the Olympics. These traditions continued through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and today are maintained by wine connoisseurs the world over.
Villa Dante offers students a chance to try wines from all over the world and to develop a sense of what fits their own singular tastes. Classes cover wine etiquette (how wine is served, tasting techniques and terms), wine for your health, vintages, regional and national wines, the relationship between foods and wines, how wine is bottled and stored, and other related topics.
With only a little bit of guidance from local experts, you will be able to appreciate wine in a whole new way for the rest of your life!
