Perhaps it was the sirens, who according to the Greeks lived in the Gulf of Sorrento its wonderful ability to enchant tourists of all ages and nationalities with its charm. In effect, legend has it that the Sorrento bay used to be dwelled by wonderful sirens from whom the town took its own name: Surrentum ( there are also other theories about the origin of this name ). Destination of the international tourism for centuries, Sorrento is one of the most celebrated places in literature . The town and the whole Peninsula projecting into the Tyrhenian Sea, have always been renowned for the mildness of its climate and the particular beauty of the nature. These elements , combined with a rich urban and historical heritage, have made it, for centuries, one of the main stops of the "journey in Italy ". Its countryside, rich in olive and citrus trees (its lemons are famous worldwide), together with the Mediterranean scrub, colours of the rocks and the deep blue of the sea, determine its eternal charm.
Sorrento is a real haven of peace for study and creativity and it is not by chance that it has been, for more than three centuries, the destination of international artists, poets and musicians. The town, Torquato Tasso's birthplace, was also the residence for some time of Wolfgang Goethe, Ibsen, Lord Byron, Cooper, Leopardi, Dumas, Giuseppe Verdi, Oscar Wilde and Friedrich Nietzsche who lived here finding inspiration for extraordinary works.
Strolling around the town streets is an experience rich in emotions and surprises. refined bars and meeting places alternate with elegant shops: from the most exclusive names of the Italian fashion to small, precious handicraft and antiques shops. Particularly renowned here in Sorrento are workshops where today, just like in the 16th century, skilful cabinet-makers inlay wood and create real furniture jewels and expert silk craftsmen produce precious masterpieces.
