Scuola Leonardo da Vinci has opened a language school in Milan - the most cosmopolitan and vibrant metropolis of Italy. The city is composed of a fascinating mixture of tradition and modernity, design and fashion, culture and Southern temperament. Its character is stamped by its historical past and its current booming industry. Visitors are attracted by the fantastic art treasures and the architectural mosaic, bearing witness to 2000 years of history.
The Sforza Castle
The Sforza Castle is one of the symbol of Milan together with the Madonnina and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Built in ten years between 1358 and 1368 under Galeazzo II Visconti. Partly destroyed in 1447 because of a decision of the Ambrosia Republic, it was rebuilt during Francesco Sforza’s period. The Castle suffered many adversities, until 1880 when the government wanted to destroy it.
The good sense prevailed and the Castle was restored under Luca Beltrami’s direction.
The entrance is situated under the tower of Filarete; on the back we find Bona di Savoia’s tower, and on the left part the Rocchetta, a fortified part inside the Castle useful to get refuge during war attacks.
The Rocchetta has a three sides internal portico, and inside his rooms there is the famous Bramante’s “Argus”. The Ducal Court usually was the residence of the lords.
One of the rooms of Ducal Court, the “Sala delle Asse” is thought to have been frescoed by Leonardo da Vinci. This work was executed by Leonardo in 1496 by order of Ludovico il Moro who, meanwhile, beutified Santa Maria delle Grazie, by ordering Bramante to make some extension works in the church (the church is worth visiting, to admire its style as a further example of the change from the Gothic to the Renaissance period).
This museum is divided into three parts:
1) Monumental building including: Measurement of length and mass, Modern physics, Optics, Electrology, the Leonardo gallery, Astronomy, Clock-making, Land transport, Graphic arts Tele-and-Radio-communications, Metallurgy, Smelting and Petroleum research. In this part there is also the Physics Research Centre and the Conference hall.
2) Rail Transport building including a collection of 21 locomotives and carriages from various periods.
3) Air and Sea Transport building including: the naval training ship “Ebe”, the bridge of the “Conte Biancamano”, an “Agriculture and Food” section.
One of the greatest galleries containing several masterpieces of Italian art from the XIV to the XX century such as: Raphael’s “Marriage of the Virgin”; Giovanni Bellini’s “Pietà”; Piero della Francesca’s “Urbino Altarpiece”; Andrea Mantegna’s “The Dead Christ”; Caravaggio’s “Supper at Emmaus”; and Bramante’s “Christ at the Column”. There are six new halls dedicated to Italian paintings between XIII and XVI century; there is a collection of metaphysical paintings, and there is also the Maria and Emilio Jesi collection, which has been donated to the gallery.
